Semester Exam Study Guide
11 12 2015The semester exam is actually written by the county and we teachers are not allowed to see it ahead of time. However, I know the standards that you will be tested on, so I and the other teachers here at Clay High put this study guide together to help you prepare for next week’s exam.
Ch. 1: Know the steps of the scientific method. What is the difference between the independent variable and the dependent variable? What’s a hypothesis? What’s the difference between a theory and a law? Know how to interpret and analyze data from charts and graphs. What constitutes reliable sources?
Ch. 2: What are the properties of water? Know the 4 macromolecule groups and their function (Carbohydrates – quick energy, Proteins – enzymes, antibodies and muscles, Lipids – long term energy, Nucleic acids – genetic information). Know what the monomers of carbohydrates, proteins and nucleic acids are. Review these Powerpoint slides from class:
Ch. 7: Know how to calculate the total magnification of a microscope. What are the 3 parts of the cell theory? What is the difference between a prokaryote and eukaryote cell? What organelle do all cells have in common? What are the differences between a plant and animal cell? Know the function of the cell’s organelles. (nucleus, ribosomes, mitochondria,…..)
Know the methods of cell transport……diffusion, facilitated diffusion, osmosis= passive transport (no energy required) and active transport (requires energy).
Review these Powerpoint slides from class:
Cell Transport and Homeostasis
Ch. 8 & 9: Know the reactants and products of both Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration. Know the difference between aerobic and anerobic processes.Know the function and structure of ATP. Be able to explain this diagram:

Also, review this Powerpoint:
cellular respiration EOC review
Ch. 10&11: Know the differences between mitosis and meiosis (It’s on the bulletin board!). Know the steps for mitosis. Understand how sexual reproduction generates diversity. What are stem cells? What is uncontrolled cell growth called? What is apoptosis?
Review this Powerpoint:
cell division dna welcome back
Ch. 12: Know the basic construction of DNA and how base pairing works. Be able to apply Chargaff’s rule of base pairing. What type of macromolecule is DNA? What are the monomers that make up DNA? What does DNA replication produce and why is it called a semi-conservative process?
Ch. 13: Understand the two processes (transcription and translation) involved in protein synthesis. Know where transcription and translation happen. Be able to create an RNA strand if given a sample strand of DNA code. Be able to use the chart of amino acids and codons to determine which amino acids are coded for in a strand of RNA. What are the three types of RNA? Be able to recognize examples of point mutations, frameshift mutations and chromosomal mutations. Be able to predict if a mutation is heritable given the type of cell (somatic or sex cell) that contains the mutation.

Ketchup Time
23 11 2015Hi folks –
While you are home this week, log in to Focus and see what you are missing in the grade book. The end of the semester is a few short weeks away and I plan to stop accepting makeup work and quizzes on December 15. So, it’s time to catch up.
I’ve entered grades for all of the items that were languishing in my inbox, so if you have a zero for something, you need to show it to me by mid-December.
Make a list of the things you need and bring it to me. Please don’t ask me to figure out what you need. I have 125 students. Makeup work is your responsibility.
All best,
Mrs H
